Synopsis: Rienzi has been excommunicated and reviled for attempting to free Rome from the bonds of the tyranny of the nobles. Meanwhile, his sister Irene is in love with one of the nobles. When she implies that he does not understand her because he has never been in love, he replies that he has loved Rome, which is like a woman to him. However, he now sees Rome falling to pieces around him and he is filled with sorrow.

Ich liebte glühend meine hohe Braut,
seit ich zum Denken, zum Fühlen erwacht,
seit mir, was einstens ihre Größe war,
erzählte der alten Ruinen Pracht.
Ich liebte schmerzlich meine hohe Braut,
da ich sie tief erniedrigt sah,
schmählich mißhandelt, grau'nvoll entstellt,
geschmäht, entehret, geschändet und verhöhnt!
Ha, wie ihr Anblick meine Wut entflammte!
Ach, wie ihr Jammer Macht gab meiner Liebe!
Mein Leben weihte ich einzig nur ihr,
ihr meine Jugend, meine Manneskraft;
denn sehen wollt' ich sie, die hohe Braut,
