The Aria Database

About the Creator

Originally from Falls Church, Virginia, I am currently a doctoral student at the University of Colorado at Boulder in vocal performance and pedagogy. I graduated summa cum laude in 1999 from the Hartt School in Hartford, Connecticut, with a Bachelor's of Music in vocal performance. I received my Masters in Music in vocal performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2002. After teaching privately in the Boulder area for a year, I moved to South Dakota to teach voice at Northern State University for two years. If you are curious, I am a tenor and I am currently studying with Curt Peterson and Patrick Mason, both of which are professors at CU-Boulder.

This page started in the summer of 1996 when a summer job at a computer helpdesk left me with a lot of down time. Using HTML skills I learned in high school, the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia, I created the web page in a non-searchable form with about 10 to 15 operas. Over the next few months, the page moved a few times, switching servers until it finally landed in a long-term spot in March 1997 where it got both its own domain name and a new searchable format. In January 2006, it moved servers again, although the domain name remained the same. From the period of March 1997 to August 1999, the Aria Database has had around 200,000 visitors (give or take 30,000 or so) and grown from about 300 arias to over 1100 arias. Since September of 1999, the page has been mentioned on a public radio station in Australia and has been featured in Chamber Music Magazine's list of Top 50 Music Websites. The page's monthly average is around 12,000 visits and 20,000 searches on the database.

As for my web experience, I have worked as a web designer for various institutions, including the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) which is a Department of Defense agency and departments at both the University of Hartford and the University of Colorado.

I hope you enjoyed this web page. If you did, please tell others about it, especially if you are at a university. If you found something useful, please also consider contributing one of your own translations or MIDIs or anything. If you would like to see more examples of my work, check out my other website, the Eastern Waterfall Guide, an interactive guide to waterfall hikes in the Eastern United States. Along with directions and descriptions of the waterfalls, the site also includes much of my own photography (a hobby of mine). In any case, please let me know what you think by e-mailing me!
