Synopsis: Gaston has been imprisoned by the Emir of Ramla. As he waits to speak to the Emir, his thoughts drift to his beloved Hélène who he has not seen since being exiled from France four years earlier.

Synopsis: Gaston has been recaptured by the Christian Crusade for apparently attempting the Count of Toulouse's life. On his execution day, his name is declared dishonorable and the execution is prepared. Gaston pleads with the judges for his innocence.

Synopsis: The Christian Crusade led by the Count of Toulouse has reached the Ramlan walls. Hélène has been captured by the Ramlans, though, and after the Emir of Ramla mentions to her that she will be killed if the Christians attempt to enter the city, she prays to God to gain her freedom.

Synopsis: The Christian Crusade led by the Count of Toulouse has reached the Ramlan walls. Hélène has been captured by the Ramlans, though, as well as her love Gaston who was exiled from France for apparently attempting Hélène's father's life. He has broken free of his guards though and comes to Hélène right as her father, whose army has broken through the walls of Ramla, also approaches. After her father condemns her for consorting with his "assassin", she replies furiously of her love for Gaston and of his innocence.

Synopsis: Hélène is overjoyed to find both the water her people need to survive in the desert and news of her beloved Gaston's location and sings about her happiness.

Synopsis: Planning to have Gaston murdered to enable him to take his niece Hélène for himself, Roger confesses his joy in such a demonic occurrence.

Synopsis: Roger believes that, in attempting to murder Gaston to gain his niece's love, he has actually murdered his own brother. Torn with self-hatred, he has left France and gone to the Holy Land and lived as a hermit. He sings of how he is unable to escape his brother's ghost which seems to follow him everywhere.

Synopsis: Roger is very attracted to his brother's daughter, Hélène who is betrothed to Gaston, the Vicomte of Béarne. He discusses with himself how he can get her for his own and, furthermore, how he can reconcile the incestuous love he feels.
