from Act II of the Italian opera Lucio Silla by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Libretto: Giovanni de Gamerra

Role: Cecilius, proscribed senator
Voice Part: soprano       Fach: male soprano|lyric soprano|lyric mezzo
Setting: an archway outside
Synopsis: Cecilius appears with a sword to go after Sulla and Cinna tries to restrain him. When Cinna asks him why he is doing it, Cecilius responds that Junia's father came to him in a dream and demanded that he kill Sulla at once. He then launches into his aria saying that the sudden trembling he feels in his chest could be anger or it could be hope. Whatever it is, though, it will go after Sulla with a vengence.

Quest'improvviso tremito, Cecilio's aria from Lucio Silla

Quest'improvviso tremito	This fateful trembling
Che in sen di più s'avanza,	Growing and growing in my breast,
Non so se sia speranza, I know not whether it be hope
Non so se sia furor. I know not whether it be wrath.

Ma fra suoi moti interni	Yet, whether in its inward feeling
Fra le mie smanie estreme,	Or in its outward wrath
O sia furore, o speme, It be madness or hope,
Paventi il traditor. It shall strike terror in the traitor's heart.
