Setting: a party at Fedora's house, Paris, France, late 19th century
Synopsis: Fedora has found out that Count Loris killed her fiance and swears to avenge his death. As the first step in her plan to capture Loris, she goes to Paris and attempts to get him to fall in love with her. After he tells her of his love for her, she tries to get him to confess of the murder. Eventually, he does confess but then says that he killed him in revenge. Fedora's fiance had seduced Loris's wife and when he caught the two of them together, Fedora's fiance shot him and Loris had to shoot back in self-defense, unintentionally striking him a mortal wound.

L'ultimo april, vi accolse una giovin lettrice,
una sirena bionda, Wanda era il nome suo fatal...
Cedendo alle lusinghe, l'amai beato...
Ma la mia buona madre l'ascosa vampa travide,
e lunge volle l'incantatrice...
Io la raggiungo, l'adduco al tempio,
mia la proclamo davanti a Dio!
M'eran padrini due vecchi amici...
Vladimiro... Nel sgreto nostro asilo 
tanto assiduo egli si mostra 
che il sospetto m'entra in core...
Un vespro, a Natale, 
partendo pel dolce castello paterno,
sovvienmi d'un dono promesso a mia madre...
Risalgo in islitta, e ratto ritorno...
A mezzo la via, discesa dall'uscio del nobile amico,
ravviso la fante di Wanda...  L'inseguo...
La donna vacilla, balbetta, confessa...
Di Wanda un biglietto recò a Vladimiro...
lo salgo : egli è uscito...
Il servo mi lascia un istante...
Io  corro al tiretto... e trovo
Che dice : "Ti attendo stasera, alle nove!"
