- Synopsis : The Countess has recently passed by and the officers joke about her intimidating presence. Tomsky mentions that it is because of her gambling past. When he finds the rest of the officers know nothing about the Countess, he tells them the story. In her youth, the Countess was in Paris and gambled a great deal. One day, she lost all of her money at faro. Noticing her hard luck, the Count Saint-Germain offered to teach her the secret of the "three cards". However, the price was to spend a night with him. Although she was indignant, she accepted the offer and the next day she won all her money back with the secret gambling trick. Over the years, she has told the secret of the "three cards" to two other people, but she was told in a dream that the next time she mentions it to someone, she will be struck down dead.
