Synopsis : Stiffelio has returned from one of his gospel missions and tells the crowd about what happened on his trip. He says that a boatman named Walter saw a man jump out of a high window while be watched by a terrified woman. As he fell, a letter fell out of his pocket and the boatman found it and gave it to Stiffelio. Stiffelio throws the letter in the fire at the end of the story.
