Setting: the Emperor's palace, ancient China
Synopsis: The Emperor is on his deathbed with Death standing nearby to take him when his time comes. Surrounded by ghosts, the Emperor calls for his musicians to drive them away. Instead, the Nightingale appears and sings of the beauty of the dawn. She succeeds in driving away the ghosts. In addition, Death is so entraced with her song that he agrees to let the Emperor live.

Ah me voici,
O prince magnanime!
Je viens chanter de tes jardin
le charme et la douceur.
Ah!
La nuit fait place à l'aurore claire.
L'éclat du ciel, l'arome des fleurs 
se mêlent dans l'air:
rayons, parfums unissent 
astres et roses confondus.
Aux blancs rosiers perlant
que de larmes!
Ah étoiles pures, blancs rosiers...
Plus loin est un jardin tranquille
clos d'un mur blanc.
