This is a wonderful organization that gives an inmate, sometimes for the first time in their life, an opportunity to develop an artistic skill. When they learn to sing, or write, or participate in a dramatic production, or create a sculpture, or paint, they develop a new identity with it, and have something constructive to do with their free time when they are released. They can join a community choir and say, 'I'm a tenor' not 'I'm an ex-con.' Because of the impact of arts in the Kansas prison system, their recitivism rate is now 50%, far less than the national norm. Thanks for reading this! |

Anyone who can sing a major scale can learn to read. Too often we overestimate what our singers know and understand, not realizing how lost they are. Or we falsely believe they would not be interested in learning to read music. I feel we have an obligation to help our singers become musically literate, and I hope to publish my sight reading curriculum in 2009 so others can use it. The choir usually has approximately 30 members, and we also take guests. We have traveled with 33 to 63 people. We have been very fortunate to have sung in beautiful and famous cathedrals, town halls and even on a cruise ship. So far, we have been to China, Israel, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, France, Spain, Ireland, Wales, England, Scotland, Australia, Turkey and Greece.The choir does some fund-raising with their concerts to earn scholarship money for students who can't afford the entire cost of the trip.I enjoy teaching beginning voice classes (two that start out with 50 people each). I also have Intermediate and advanced classes. I 'feed' my own choir with people from these classese.I have 43 published choral pieces, different styles and voicings.I have taught full time since 1962. I could retire but do enjoy teaching. It is a job that is hard to give up. |

| | Additional Information: I know this may be too late, but I am hoping you might still be able to include this information.There is a person that I would like to have you consider in your materials.Ms. Anita Kerr has been one of my 'heroes' in music for many years. She was one of the first women to conduct a nationally rated symphonic orchestra. Her choral arrangements span the full gamut of styles, voicings,sacred and secular choral literature. Her compositions and arrangements have been performed by churches of all faiths, by all levels of school groups and profession groups as well. Anita's music has earned her at least four Grammies and much recognition from movie producers, and the professional world. The truth be known, many popular choral arranges have utilize her techniques and styles.She now lives in Geneva, Switzerland. She is is good health and continue to compose and arrange. Without question, Anita Kerr is one of the icons in our choral world. She deserves all of the recognition we can give to her. It is my hope to have ACDA do a special tribute to her for her continued artistic endeavors.Anita Kerr:Anita Kerr is truly one of the great 'Ladies' of choral music. Her arrangements have been performed for over 45 years. Anita is also a conductor and was one of the first women to conduct a major symphonic orchestra in the United States. I will include a bio with this information.I have known Anita for well over 30 years. I have had the pleasure of working with her and having her on my Jazz Camp staff one year. Her husband, Alex Grob, is also a well know person in the music world.Anita has music published with several major publishers since the 60s. Her music is performed by middle school choirs as well as professional choral groups. She is known as a cross over artist. Her music is played on religious, county western and jazz radio stations. She has been presented 4 Grammies for music such as 'A Man And A Woman,' that was the theme song for a movie of the same name, and she continues to write and conduct in Geneve. Her walls are decorated with gold and platinum records.I had the opportunity to visit with her and her family in Geneva about a month ago. Anita is about 82 years young and as spunky as can be. I |

Previously, Miss Keylock worked with the Indianapolis Children's Choir as the Director of Satellite Programs/Assistant Education Director, taught public school for five years, and worked with the Lawrence Children's Choir in Kansas. She holds a Master's of Music in Conducting degree from Butler University where she conducted the BU Women's Glee Club, and holds an undergraduate degree in Music Education from Wheaton College. She holds the B.S. and the M.A. in Music Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and the M.M. and the D.M.A. in Choral Conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.Dr. Menk is founder and conductor of the South Bend Chamber Singers, an ensemble of 30 select singers from the Michiana area. The Chamber Singers were featured regularly on National Public Radio's weekly series, The First Art, and they have performed before state and division conventions of the American Choral Directors Association. Winners of the 2004 ASCAP/Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming, the Singers were also finalists for the prestigious Margaret Hillis Award, given annually by Chorus America, in 2000. Menk also serves a Music Director of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus.At Saint Mary's College, Dr. Menk conducts the Women's Choir, the Collegiate Choir, and prepares the Madrigal Singers for the annual Christmas Madrigal Dinners. Under her direction, the Women's Choir has performed on tour throughout the United States, and it regularly commissions, performs, and records new works for women's voices for their series on the ProOrgano label. In February 2005 they invited performed for the ACDA National Convention in Los Angeles, CA. The choir also hosts the annual Saint Mary's College High School Women's Choir Festival in which choirs from four states perform for each other and a panel of commentators.Dr. Menk has been a conducting participant in the National Conductor's Symposium with the Vancouver Chamber Choir and the Oregon Bach Festival. She is Editor of the Saint Mary's College Choral Series, a distinctive series of select music for women's voices published by earthsongs of Corvallis, Oregon. Along with Dr. James Laster of Shenandoah Conservatory, she has prepared an annotated bibliography of women's choir resources, which has been published by the American Choral Foundation.Dr. Menk has conducted four concerts of music for chorus and orchestra in Carnegie Hall, and she serves regularly as a guest conductor and choral adjudicator throughout the United States. |
